There are encouraging signs of progress towards the treatment of arthritis; from the work that is taking place worldwide on new drug therapies to nondrug therapies and self-help management.
Early diagnosis is keyIt cannot be stressed enough how the early diagnosis of arthritis impacts on the degree of severity of the condition. Early diagnosis can make a significant difference to the prognosis. We urge you to find out about the signs and symptoms of arthritis. Use the resources of the Arthritis Foundation, our helpline, brochures, lectures and awareness days. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor questions. Take control. It is your body and you, more than anyone, know what you are feeling. Seek specialist medical advice where necessary.
Non-drug therapiesApart from prescription medication, certain lifestyle measures may make a significant difference to your quality of life. Try to keep your weight well controlled, eat healthily, stop smoking, exercise moderately and utilise non-drug and complementary therapies where possible. These include: physiotherapy, acupuncture, occupational therapy, psychotherapy, exercise and relaxation modalities. See the benefits of Pilates for arthritis and caring for your back in the workplace in the April/May issue of Joint Ability.
